“Thanks to Betfair a whole new range of betting markets is available to us. Place and Each Way betting have of course been popular for many years but only with the advent of the betting exchanges do we have the opportunity to lay the place. That’s to say, make a bet that that a horse won’t come in the first 2, 3 or 4 places. The number of places varies on the number of runners in a race and for races with only a few horses there may only be a first place. For large fields like The Grand National you can win a place for being in the first 5 across the line. For the purposes of Betfair Edge we will concentrate on races with a minimum of 8 horses running.
The chances of a fancied horse winning a place may seem a given but in reality so many unknown factors come into play that even the fastest horse with the best jockey onboard at its preferred track can come 5th , 6th … or last! Look at some day’s results and you will confirm this. The going, the draw, even the horse’s temperament on the day are huge factors which can’t always be taken into account in the form and odds.
Betfair Edge consists of my two current strategies for laying horses. They are based on several facts, the first being the above in relation to the unpredictable nature of horses and racing. The second is simple mathematical probability, as I explain within the system”.
