“Professional gamblers and horse racing experts avoid certain type of races but are able to analyse form, trainer and jockey performance etc and identify the likely winners in most. Casual punters and the rest of us don’t have the time, knowledge or experience to do this. A winning strategy is therefore to focus attention on specific types of races and the runners taking part. This means fewer potential bets per day of course but should give us a relatively quick and easy way to find our selections for the day. This is the basis of the Patient Punter approach.
This guide will describe two specific betting strategies, both for Handicap races. The main system should give on average two to five bets a day and the other may only give you one a week. Fortunately, I’ll break this down in a way you can analyse a day’s Race Cards in twenty minutes to half an hour and you can look for qualifiers under both at the same time.
The basis of both systems is to find specific types of runners where circumstances make them strong bets. Some might call these ‘loopholes’ in the way handicapping of racehorses works, but I think of it more as identifying opportunities where horses may perform better than the market expects.
Adding extra weight to a horse does of course have an impact. If the handicapper got it exactly right every race would end as a dead heat and I can’t say I’ve ever seen that! Some are able to defy the weight penalty but eventually it has an impact. The two approaches described here are almost contrarian in that in one we are looking for horses lower down the weight and in the other we back the top weight, but there is method in this madness”.
